You probably don't need to be so worried about your daughter, as most children with heart murmurs are able to lead normal lives although some of them may need medication or surgery at some stage. The term 'heart murmur' refers to a noise that can be heard when a doctor listens to a person's heart through a stethoscope. The flow of blood through the various chambers of the heart is usually smooth, but if the blood flow becomes turbulent it may produce a noise that can be heard as a murmur. not all heart murmurs indicate that there is something wrong with the structure of the heart; an 'innocent' murmur may be found in many healthy children. When a doctor detects a heart murmur in a child they can look for other physical signs which might indicate heart disease, as well as assessing how loud the murmur is, and seeing whether it changes when the child is moved into a different position. You daughter may need to have an ECG (a recording of the heart's electrical activity) and an echocardiogram (a type of scan which produces pictures of the inside of the heart). This extra information can help to differentiate an innocent murmur from one which indicates that there is some defect in the structure of the heart. The results of the ECG and echocardiogram should make it clear whether there is any heart defect (such as a 'hole in the heart') and then the doctor looking after your daughter will be able to advise whether she needs any medication or surgery, or whether the cause of her murmur is one that does not require any treatment. My lad Callum as a different kind of heart problem .... A lot worse than a murmer and as had two operations already since birth and he is only 13 now & will require at least 2 more before he is 16 yrs old....None of this as stopped him doing what any normal lad or child can do where as activities are concerned. He plays football, does running for his school,is in ccf ( navy section) many activities he does.Your daughter and you as a parent have no need to have any worries as such.( although as a parents you do, regardless, cos we are parents aint we)She'll be fine and just let her carry on as normal.Hope this helps ease your mind m8

Sorry for the late reply, but I have to confess I don't read this section of RPO too often.
Most of what Brid says is correct, but in the original post you say your daughter has both a heart murmur and a heart problem. Speaking from personal experience, I know there is a huge difference. My heart has spent years "double beating" and sending shivers up my spine once every so often, because the natural reaction is to panic. I have a bi-annual check ups because I'm totally paranoid about stuff like that and get told I have a perfectly healthy heart and that nothing is wrong. But if the doctor said "heart problem" I'd judge that as something completely different. You really need to be clear on exactly what the doctor said, not what he may have unconsciously implied.
However, the very fact that you say your daughter has recently ben ill could quite easily be the cause. Is she ill often, or is she a healthy kid (you don't say how old she is so it's hard to speculate too much)? But if she's running around all the time and has stopped due to illness, this is a possible cause, as is sudden growth or a rapid change in levels of fitness.
All in all, be aware that heart murmurs can be completely harmless. Only the scan which the doctor has made an appointment for can give you a diagnosis. The fact that your daughter has a heart murmur is a sign that something may be wrong, not that something is definitely wrong. Sending your daughter for a scan is a safety measure - a way of finding out exactly what is happening, nothing more and nothing less. Putting it bluntly, you need to find the cause. The heart scan could do this.
I'm sorry to say this, but there's nothing you can do until the scan. Good luck and keep us informed.
Obviously any medical condition concerning the heart is a concern. I am not an expert in this area, but my mother has lived with a heart murmur since she was diagnosed around 4-5 years old. She is now 68 (sorry mum but its in a good cause) and has never had any problems or restrictions with her heart.
Although she was not particularly sporty, she has been reasonably active over the years.
All I can advise is that you all try to be positive and take the advice of the doctors.
Good replies from Brid and Albus - hope it all goes ok with the scan. It's only natural her mum will worry - it's scary when you don't know what your facing and it's come out of the blue but once you know the results of the scan it will make things clearer.
Fingers crossed for you all
